About me
My name is Nicholas Orsillo, and since 2008, I have been providing editing, proofreading, and translation services to scholars, universities, NGOs, and museums. My main areas of focus are the humanities, social sciences, arts, and environment. I specialize in working with clients whose native language is not English.
Born and raised in the New England region of the United States, I have been living in Brno, Czech Republic, for more than twenty years.
As an undergraduate, I studied history at the University of Rochester. In my junior year, I spent a semester abroad in Prague, an experience that changed my life. After returning to the US, I completed my bachelor's degree and worked an office job in Boston for a few years before I decided to go back to the Czech Republic, this time to the country's second city of Brno, and study Czech for six months. Well, six months has now turned into more than twenty years!
I hold a master's degree in environmental humanities from Masaryk University in Brno. My thesis focused on the environmental impact of Communist-era agricultural policy. As I enjoyed conducting historical research, I decided to pursue a Ph.D. at the same institute. By that time, I had already begun my career as an editor and translator. It soon became apparent to me that this work would be more fulfilling than building a career in academia. I then made the difficult decision to drop out of my doctoral program and work full time as a freelance editor and translator. It's a choice I haven't regretted.
